Incorporated as a town in 1938 Myrtle Beach became a city in 1957. Its name comes from the wax myrtle, a shrub that grows abundantly in the area.

History records show that the first visitors, a party of Spaniards from Hispaniola, actually landed here in 1526 eventually establishing the first European settlement in the U.S. That settlement, San Miguel de Cauldape, was abandoned the following year, though and the group returned to Hispaniola.

A lot has changed since then with Myrtle Beach now boasting nearly 14 million tourists a year. Selected as the Number 1 Family Beach in America, Myrtle Beach offers the finest in round-the-clock entertainment and dining establishments. Besides the breathtaking views, Myrtle Beach has over 100 golf courses to choose from. Plus they have golf package companies, golf schools and other related businesses.
